Fun Family Activities for January

After the busy holiday season is over, it’s easy to get bored in January, so we have some ideas of fun family activities that you and the kids can do together.

Make homemade hot chocolate

Did you know there’s a ton of different hot chocolate recipes online? You can spice up regular hot chocolate by adding new flavors to it, everything from good old cinnamon to dark chocolate to red velvet.

Scrapbooking

A lot of families have boxes of old photos sitting around. Make organizing them a fun, kid-friendly activity by doing an arts and crafts night. Scrapbooking is a low-stress way of being creative and spending time together.

Have a bonfire

Here in Alabama, winter can mean perfect bonfire temperatures. Fill up a container with some fleece or flannel blankets, light up a fire in the backyard, and toast marshmallows with your family.

Organize game night

Got board games sitting around and gathering dust in the closet? Schedule quality family time by organizing a night once a week that everyone sits down and plays games together. It’s a great way to get interact and challenge your thinking.

Hone your golfing skills

Beat the winter blues while stepping up your game when you go golfing at one of the coastal golf courses nearby. Orange Beach Golf Center and Kiva Dunes Resort are two great places to start. If you prefer mountain landscapes to beach views, head to Cloudmont Ski & Golf Resort in Mentone, AL.

Fish on the Gulf

Soak in scenic views of the Gulf of Mexico while testing your angling skills at Gulf State Park Pier. The pier extends 1,540 feet and is 20 feet wide, offering 2,448 feet of seating space. There’s also an on-site restaurant so you can grab a bit to eat when you get hungry, then go right back to your spot.

Shop the Mobile Museum of Art’s Night Market

Make headway on your holiday shopping list when you attend the monthly Mobile Museum of Art’s Night Market on Dec. 5 from 5-9 p.m. Browse vendor booths to explore a diverse array of handmade goods and locally-crafted items. Music and food help provide a festive backdrop to your shopping.

Attend the Huntsville Christmas Craft Show

Mark your calendar for the weekend of Dec. 6-8 to catch the Huntsville Christmas Craft Show. The bazaar will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The wares available for purchase will span a variety of mediums including stained glass, pottery, jewelry, floral arrangements, needlework, ceramics, toys, woodwork, and clothing.
